In the course of constructing the new Albert Schweitzer Clinic in Graz in 2007, a visual concept for the design of the premises was developed. The aim was to decorate the residents’ rooms as well as common areas with photo images.
In coming up with the concept, pictures were to be selected that would have a calming effect on elderly or ill residents and those with dementia. This included motifs that would evoke memories and associations from the residents’ own life. The photographs should serve as focal points for social interaction.
Based on Erwin Boehm’s care model, this type of image composition is aimed at reactivating patients with dementia – a goal, which influences the wellbeing of the residents as well as the satisfaction of the staff.
Because of the unusually large format of the canvases of up to 150 x 100cm, as well as the careful selection of motifs, the response was overwhelmingly positive. In fact, management considered the project such a success that, since implementation of the project, four further facilities have been fitted out with images. These new projects have also been a great success and more are in planning.
